Zunächst hieß es für die Katalanen: Warten. Darauf, ob Saúl Ñíguez (26) von Atlético zum FC Chelsea zieht und die Madrilenen Antoine Griezmann (31) holen. Erst dadurch entstand Platz bzw. Bedarf für de Jong. Es wurde ein äußerst hektischer Abend und eine hektische Nacht, die nicht fehlerfrei blieb.

„Mit Ricky van Wolfswinkel habe ich bereits zweimal den internationalen Rekord des ‚Last-Minute-Transfers‘ gebrochen“, blickte de Jongs Berater Louis Laros im Gespräch mit dem „Algemeen Dagblad“ auf den Deadline Day zurück. „Der Stress an so einem Abend, pfff … Das ist überhaupt nicht lustig.“ Erst um 23:54 Uhr habe de Jong die letzte Unterschrift unter den Vertrag mit Barça gesetzt, um 23:59 Uhr, eine Minute vor Transferschluss, seien die Unterlagen von den Katalanen bei der LaLiga eingegangen.

Doch damit nicht genug: Bei der Überprüfung der Dokumente stieß die spanische Liga auf einen Formfehler. Barça hatte angegeben, dass de Jong in den Niederlanden geboren wurde, während der Ex-Gladbacher 1990 im Schweizer Aigle zur Welt kam. „Eine solche Formalität muss dann geprüft und diskutiert werden“, sagte Laros. „Noch mehr Ärger und Stress. Zum Glück hat alles geklappt, aber deshalb hat es auch so lange gedauert.“



Während de Jongs Wechsel zu Barça für viele überraschend kam, soll der Stürmer darauf spekuliert haben, da Trainer Ronald Koeman, der ihn aus gemeinsamen Tagen bei der niederländischen Nationalelf kennt und schätzt, immer gesagt haben soll, dass er ihn nach Katalonien holen wolle. Dafür habe de Jong auch das Interesse der PSV Eindhoven zuvor abgeblockt. Gegen 17:30 Uhr sei am Dienstag schließlich der Anruf Koemans bei de Jong eingegangen, zehn Stunden später war der Transfer durch. De Jong selbst soll erst am Mittwochmorgen davon erfahren haben, weil er gegen 2 Uhr schlafen gegangen sei.
